ARTIST STATEMENT:
FIELD, 2023 DOCUMENTS A CANNER AND FAMILIAR MOTIFS THAT IDENTIFY THE BRONX. INSPIRED BY MY COMMUNITY, BUT ALSO BY MY MOTHER, WHO COLLECTS CANS AND TENDS TO THE STREETS OF THE BRONX JUST LIKE THE ANCESTORS WERE ONCE FORCED TO DO. THE 8 BALL JACKET IS AN ICON THAT WE HAVE BEEN CONDITIONED TO ASSOCIATE WITH AGGRESSION OR VIOLENCE. THE BRONX CONTINUES TO BE UNDERSERVED. THERE ARE PEOPLE OUT THERE 'PICKING' CANS AND BECOMING 'FIGHTERS'. TWO DRASTICALLY DIFFERENT STORIES, BUT SIMILAR CIRCUMSTANCES. WE ARE EXPECTED TO FIT THE TYPICAL MOLDS OF THOSE WHO ARE COMMONLY OVERLOOKED. WE TEND TO FIELDS, WE FIGHT WITH OUR HEARTS, AND WE CONTINUE TO MOVE FORWARD, TOGETHER.
